Zijn moeder, Adele Ann Zerilli, is van Italiaanse afkomst. Vanaf de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1960-1969\">jaren 60<\/a>\u00a0speelde Springsteen in meerdere bands, waaronder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Castiles?action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">The Castiles<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steel_Mill?action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Steel Mill<\/a>\u00a0en\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dr._Zoom_and_The_Sonic_Boom?action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Dr. Zoom and The Sonic Boom<\/a>. In 1972 werd de zanger ontdekt door\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Hammond\">John Hammond<\/a>, die al eerder Bob Dylan ontdekte. Springsteen tekende in dat jaar dan ook een contract bij Hammonds werkgever\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbia_Records\">Columbia Records<\/a>. Zijn eerste album,\u00a0<em>Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ<\/em>, verscheen in januari 1973 en was vernoemd naar de badplaats\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asbury_Park\">Asbury Park<\/a>, waar hij in het begin van zijn carri\u00e8re in kleine clubs optrad. In september 1973 verscheen zijn tweede album:\u00a0<em>The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle<\/em>. Hoewel deze albums in eerste instantie niet aansloegen, werden ze jaren later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Platina_(muziek)\">platina<\/a>. Springsteen heeft als bijnaam &#8220;The Boss&#8221; omdat hij in zijn eerste band over het geld ging.
